SALLY MORGAN

This term in Visual Art we are studying Sally Morgan.

Sally Morgan grew up in Perth, Western Australia. She was raised by her Aboriginal mother and grandmother. Sally did not know about her family history because at that time the law allowed Aboriginal children to be taken away from their parents. Both Sally's mother and grandmother were taken from their parents when they were children.

From a young age Sally loved drawing and used charcoal to do pictures whenever she could - on bark as well as on roads, footpaths and walls.

When Sally got older she wanted to learn about her family history. When tracing back her family she met her uncle, Solomon Cocky. Solomon lived near the Great Western Desert and made drawings, even though he was nearly blind. Through him, she found inspiration to paint wonderful pictures, full of vibrant colour, which tell the story of her people, their land and their history.
